Featured Business: Hecho in Oak Park

Have you been to the newest taqueria in Oak Park yet? If not then you’re missing out. Located at 1053 Lake Street, they’ll be happy to serve you from 11am – 10pm Monday through Saturday, and 11am – 9pm Sunday.

Owner Saul Garcia has brought in the expertise of restaurateur Max Acuna, who was tasked with creating a dining experience that starts the moment you walk in the doors, and ends with the final sip of one of their hand-crafted margaritas.

When Saul & Max realized their “grab-n-go” Suburrito idea wasn’t the right fit for the space, they turned their attention to a simpler concept. This is where Max’s work really began. Max and Saul worked together on previous restaurant ventures, and so Saul was confident in Max’s ability to revamp the establishment into something fresh and unique for Downtown Oak Park.

Starting with the menu, Max knew that each item that came from the kitchen needed the appropriate time and attention to detail for its creation. The snack menu or “antojitos” consists of traditional chips & guacamole, to “elotes,” where ears of corn are rubbed with mayo, Mexican cream, queso cotija and finished with chili powder. They also have a variety of crafted tacos – carne asada, shrimp, fish, chicken and vegetarian to name a few. Any of the sides the offer will round out your meal nicely. From the handmade tortillas to combining the flavors & seasonings, and aligning of the freshest garnishes and salsas, these dishes have been designed to be a work of art.

Speaking of art, Max is also responsible for the original logo, taking influence from the “Made in Mexico” symbol, and also for the immersive décor. Colors, textures, woodwork and other materials were all carefully chosen and combined to create an authentic setting.

Once the menu and décor were dialed in, attention was turned to the bar. The signature margarita, “Mezcalucha,” is made with a mezcal that’s distilled only in the Mexican region of Oaxaca. Each component is fresh, most importantly, the homemade lime juice, which is hand-squeezed daily. Each margarita has its own story, which you can only learn while your margarita is being handcrafted in front of you. The bar also has a selection of beer. Stop in today and say hello!
